An Introduction to Topos Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this text is to equip the reader with an intuitive but precise understanding of elementary structures of category and topos theory. In order to achieve this goal, we provide a guided tour through category theory, leading to the definition of an elementary (Lawvere–Tierney) topos. Then we turn to the investigation of consequences of this definition. In particular, we analyse in detail the topos Set op , the internal structure of its subobject classifier and its variation over stages. Next we turn to the discussion of the interpretation of a logic and language in topos, viewed as a model of higher order intuitionistic multisort type theory, as well as the geometric perspective on a topos, viewed as a category of set-valued sheaves over base category equipped with a Grothendieck topology. This text is designed as an elementary introduction, written in a self-contained way, with no previous knowledge required.

Topos theory and ‘neo-realist’ quantum theory
Topos theory, a branch of category theory, has been proposed as mathematical basis for the formulation of physical theories. In this article, we give a brief introduction to this approach, emphasising the logical aspects. Each topos serves as a ‘mathematical universe’ with an internal logic, which is used to assign truth-values to all propositions about a physical system. We show in detail how ...
متن کاملThe Fundamental Progroupoid of a General Topos
It is well known that the category of covering projections (that is, locally constant objects) of a locally connected topos is equivalent to the classifying topos of a strict progroupoid (or, equivalently, a localic prodiscrete groupoid), the fundamental progroupoid, and that this progroupoid represents first degree cohomology. In this paper we generalize these results to an arbitrary topos. Th...

1. Introduction Mac Lane and Moerdijk, 1992, in their thorough introduction to topos theory, start their Prologue by saying – A startling aspect of topos theory is that it unifies two seemingly wholly distinct mathematical subjects: on the one hand, topology and algebraic geometry, and on the other hand, logic and set theory. Indeed , a topos can be considered both as a " generalized space " an...
متن کاملA Topos Foundation for Theories of Physics: II. Daseinisation and the Liberation of Quantum Theory
This paper is the second in a series whose goal is to develop a fundamentally new way of constructing theories of physics. The motivation comes from a desire to address certain deep issues that arise when contemplating quantum theories of space and time. Our basic contention is that constructing a theory of physics is equivalent to finding a representation in a topos of a certain formal languag...
متن کاملClassifying Toposes for First-Order Theories
By a classifying topos for a first-order theory T, we mean a topos E such that, for any topos F , models of T in F correspond exactly to open geometric morphisms F → E . We show that not every (infinitary) first-order theory has a classifying topos in this sense, but we characterize those which do by an appropriate ‘smallness condition’, and we show that every Grothendieck topos arises as the c...
